Laboratories
Research-based analyses of most organic and inorganic compounds, and toxicity testing, for businesses and authorities.

Organic and inorganic laboratories
We can determine environmental contaminants and other substances in most sample types, and we develop methods adapted to the customer's problem.
The concentrations in the samples are often very low, so strict requirements are placed on the environment, personnel and instruments. The laboratories have advanced analytical equipment, including several high-resolution mass spectrometers, and can measure both organic and inorganic pollutants very accurately.
The methods are accredited according to NS-EN ISO/IEC 17025 for a number of components in different matrices.

The Health Effects Laboratory
The only laboratory in Norway with GLP certification for the assessment of human health risks through in vitro toxicity testing.
The laboratory is one of Europe's leaders in nanotoxicology and nanosafety. It researches genotoxicity, mutagenicity, in vitro carcinogenicity and endocrine effects, with advanced cell models such as 2D, 3D, organoids and stem cells.
We study the toxicity of natural and man-made substances with cells from humans, mammals and fish, and contribute to regulatory research through frameworks such as AOP, IATA, NGRA and Safe and Sustainable by Design.
National Reference Laboratory for Air
The Norwegian Environment Agency appointed NILU as the national reference laboratory for air in 2001.
Local air quality in Norwegian municipalities is measured through the program "Monitoring of air quality in Norway". The reference laboratory ensures that the measurement data is of high quality and can be compared, according to the EU's air quality directive and the Air Pollution Act.
Together with the Norwegian Environment Agency, the laboratory has developed a quality system in two parts: who is responsible for what, and detailed procedures for maintaining and calibrating the instruments.

Certification and accreditation
The project implementation is certified according to ISO 9001, the laboratories are accredited according to ISO 17025, and the health effects laboratory is GLP certified.
